Good morning, 757!

🚧 Start here, because it changes how the whole weekend works: the HRBT is closed westbound, all weekend. Not a lane, and not just overnight. Every westbound lane toward Hampton shuts Friday at 9 p.m. and does not reopen until Monday at 5 a.m., while crews repave the inside of the existing tunnel. Eastbound toward Norfolk stays open the entire time, so which leg is the hard one depends on where you sleep. On the Southside: driving up to the Peninsula is the closed direction, and coming home is fine. On the Peninsula: going down to Norfolk or the Beach is fine, and getting back home is the closed direction. If your weekend stays on one side of the water, or you are only crossing between Portsmouth and Norfolk, none of this touches you.

VDOT map of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel October 2026 full weekend closures, showing the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 as the alternate route. Westbound toward Hampton closes Friday Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. through Monday Oct. 5 at 5 a.m.

VDOT's closure map. Full schedule, FAQs and live updates at vdot.virginia.gov.

How to get across instead. VDOT's primary detour is the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac. The Route 17 James River Bridge and the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry are the other two ways over. Leave earlier than you think you need to, because every Peninsula-bound car on the Southside is about to funnel into the same tunnel. And here is the part that will catch people: VDOT says plainly that Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze may not show the closure. If your phone routes you to the HRBT on Saturday, your phone is wrong. Check 511 Virginia.

It is not only this weekend, and it applies to every Peninsula pick below. Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown and Williamsburg all sit on the far side of that tunnel from the Southside, so assume I-664 for any of them rather than working it out listing by listing. Westbound closes again Oct. 9 to 12 if crews need it, and then it flips: eastbound toward Norfolk Oct. 16 to 19, and Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 if needed. The starred dates on the map are the if-needed ones. Every one of those picks is still worth going to. Just go around, and leave early.

Every year, somebody drives out to Suffolk Executive Airport on the morning of the Peanut Fest parade and finds a quiet field. Do not be that person. The parade is Saturday at 10 a.m. in downtown Suffolk. The festival, the gates and the airport and Jon Langston, runs next Thursday through Sunday, October 8 to 11.

The rest of October arrived on schedule. Ten murals start going up on the sides of buildings at the Oceanfront tomorrow, 150 artists take Duke of Gloucester Street on Saturday, and a 1920 carousel in Hampton is running its horses haunted for a dollar a ride.

Four ways to use this issue, and we are going to sort them by which side of the water you are on, because that is the part most lists skip.

Kids, and one open day. On the Peninsula, Fall-O-Ween at Newport News Park: free in, free parking, Saturday and Sunday both, pumpkin carvers and a corn maze and north of a hundred craft vendors. On the Southside, India Fest at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, which is free, free to park, indoors if it rains, runs 11 to 7, and has no age ceiling on it. Do not cross the water for a free kids' day, and this weekend that is not merely a preference. Both sides have one. And if it is specifically a pumpkin patch you are after, the Southside's is Greenbrier Farms in Chesapeake, free to walk into with $10 to park on a weekend, further down this issue.

You work Saturdays. Sunday is genuinely yours this week. On the Southside: the Virginia Symphony's free play-in and sing-along in Norfolk at 3, where they hand you music for any instrument at any level, and a free fae market at the Pagoda garden that runs to 9 p.m. On the Peninsula: the Hampton Carousel is open Sunday 11 to 8 at a dollar a ride, cash, and it is right there on the downtown Hampton waterfront in Carousel Park. And out of Suffolk, a biologist-led bus into the Great Dismal Swamp for ten dollars, though that one needs a phone call today.

No kids, nobody to go with. Two of these are built to absorb a stranger rather than leave you holding a drink: the Sunday sing-along, where turning up with an instrument is the whole point, and Swiping Right at the Harrison Opera House, $20, cabaret tables, an opera about dating apps. Both are Norfolk.

You want dinner, not a festival. Fair. Two places opened in the last two weeks and both are open this weekend. Magnolia & Marlin in Norfolk's East Beach started serving on September 25, Friday and Saturday 5 to 10 and Sunday 5 to 9, and posts no menu prices anywhere we can find, so go in expecting a new-dining-room bill. Coastal Beach BBQ near Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach is a competition-winning food truck that has just turned into an actual storefront, which the Virginian-Pilot wrote up on September 20. And Ghent Restaurant Week is very probably in its last weekend, with the caveat below.

You grew up here. The Merci Train gallery opens Saturday at the Virginia War Museum in Newport News. In 1949 France sent America forty-nine boxcars of gifts to say thank you for post-war aid, one per state, and Saturday is the ribbon cutting on a permanent gallery for Virginia's. Same building holds Truman's World War I helmet and a piece of the wall at Dachau.

Now the money, plainly. Two "free" things here carry an asterisk. The Virginia Children's Festival at Town Point Park reads like a free city event and is $7.50 at the gate. Historic Greenbrier Farms is free to walk into, barnyard and all, but their own page puts parking at $10 on Saturdays and Sundays and the bounce houses carry a charge they do not publish.

Two things in the listings. A few carry an easy to do solo note, which now means the thing itself will absorb you, not merely that nobody will stare. And where we could confirm it there is a Runs again line, because a ten-day mural festival and a concert series playing its last night are different decisions.

And one new section, down past Sunday: Every Week. Weekend listings are good at giving you a Saturday and bad at giving you a life. Every Week is the standing stuff, a Saturday volunteer crew, a Sunday bird walk, a Thursday bluegrass jam, a Friday dance, with the day and the next date. If you have been here two years and the one-offs are starting to feel like tourism in your own city, that section is the answer to it.

Four more worth the calendar:

  • A swamp safari out of Suffolk, ten dollars, and you have to phone ahead.

  • A road comic playing two nights at an actual Newport News comedy club, $16.50 with the fees already in it.

  • "The President's Own" United States Marine Band plays the Sandler Center Saturday night. Free, but the ticket has to be in your hand.

  • Virginia Opera opens its season with a show about dating apps. That is the actual production, not a bit.

Let's get to it.

PRESENTED BY VICTORY PERFORMANCE

The kid in warmups, the kid in the game

You have watched the warm up and then the game, and they are two different kids. That gap is not effort or talent. It is the part nobody trains…the most powerful 6 inches on the field…their mind! Victory Performance coaches athletes from high school to the pros, in Hampton or over video. Sessions start at $150 and they offer a free, no pressure, no commitment consult to see if it’s a good fit, and Dr. Amy, the founder, mental performance coach and a sports medicine physician, takes that call herself. (757) 863-1349.

All Weekend Long

Everything in this section runs straight through the weekend. The day sections below have a set start time on a given day, and where one of them plays two nights we say both.

🎨 An Occasion for the Arts puts more than 150 artists along Duke of Gloucester Street in downtown Williamsburg, Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a kickoff party Friday at 6. Admission is free, and it has run every October since 1969. The Avant Garden zone in the Wren Garden on the William and Mary campus is the kids' end, also free. Runs again: once a year, first weekend of October.

🎬 Virginia Queer Film Festival runs Friday through Sunday in Norfolk and uses two buildings, so check which before you drive: Friday at The Wave, 4107 Colley Avenue, then Saturday and Sunday at ODU's University Theatre. Screenings are $12, or $3 for students, with military and 60-plus discounts; a full pass is $100. Saturday's centerpiece is Hunky Jesus, on San Francisco's Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Q and A after it is the screening to pick if you are going on your own. · easy to do solo

🖌️ ViBe Mural Festival paints ten walls across Virginia Beach's ViBe Creative District, at addresses up 18th Street, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Mediterranean and Baltic. Watching from the sidewalk costs nothing and 18th Street parking near ViBe Park is free, though the 19th Street meters are not. Guided walking and golf cart tours run Friday to Sunday, including a First Friday walk at 6 p.m. tomorrow; the district posts no price for those, so ask when you book. The tour is the version of this that absorbs a stranger, and it is easy to do solo. Walking the walls by yourself is just a walk. Runs again: through October 11.

🎃 Fall-O-Ween Festival takes Newport News Park Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days: professional pumpkin carvers, a corn maze, a petting zoo, face painting and more than a hundred craft vendors. Free to get in and free to park. Coming from the Southside, remember the HRBT is shut westbound all weekend, so you are going around on I-664 and should add time. One honest gap: the city's page does not say which activities cost extra once you are inside, so budget for the face paint.

🦪 Yorktown Wine & Oyster Festival works the water at Riverwalk Landing, Saturday noon to 6 and Sunday noon to 4, and Sunday is the cheaper, calmer day. Read the ticket line: there is no free walk-up, everybody needs a ticket to enter the event area, and the number is limited. Grand Tasting is $35 Sunday, $50 Saturday, $85 for both. A non-drinking ticket is $20 and is still required. Parking at York Hall and the Battlefield Visitor Center is free, and so is the trolley.

👻 Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens opens the scary half of the park at 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with no re-entry after 8. It comes with park admission rather than its own ticket, which sounds generous until you price it: cheapest ticket on their site is $61.99 and parking starts at $34. The park's own guidance is that families with young children should use discretion after 6. The daytime version, the Halloween Spooktacular, runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for ages nine and under in the Sesame Street Forest of Fun, same admission, and nobody jumps out at anybody. Runs again: select nights through November 1.

🎠 Haunted Horse Rides at the Hampton Carousel is the cheapest thing in this issue by a distance. The 1920 carousel on the downtown Hampton waterfront runs its horses haunted 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. A dollar a ride, cash, with tickets at the carousel or the Hampton History Museum. Runs again: through November 1, closed Mondays.

🏛️ First Weekends: Discover Olde Towne is Portsmouth's: live music in the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center courtyard at 400 High Street, Friday 5 to 8 p.m., and an art market along High and Court, Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The city's 2026 listing posts no admission price; older pages for this series called it free and we are not going to print that as a fact for this date. Runs again: first weekend of every month.

🍽️ Ghent Restaurant Week has 17 Norfolk kitchens on it, Doumar's and Fellini's and Press 626 and TASTE among them. Now the honest problem, because it is ours and not yours: the Ghent Business Association's own page lists every restaurant and not a single date. Every other source we can find, including one participating restaurant's own page, says it ends Sunday, October 4, which would make this the last weekend of it. We are not going to print somebody else's date as a fact of ours, so treat it as probably-final and call the place you want. Each restaurant sets its own special, so there is no one price to quote you either.

🚜 Fall Festival at Historic Greenbrier Farms runs daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Chesapeake: free hayrides to a 15-acre pick-your-own patch, a corn maze, a flower cart and a barnyard you can walk straight into. Getting in costs nothing. Two things do: parking is $10 on Saturdays and Sundays, and the bounce houses carry a charge the farm does not publish, so ask at the gate. Patch pumpkins start at $12. Runs again: daily through late October.

  • Cost: $16.50, and the club states that price includes fees

  • Source: Cozzy's

🎭 Swiping Right: Opera in the Age of Online Dating

  • Details: Harrison Opera House, 160 West Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk · that street is in Norfolk, do not drive to Virginia Beach · Friday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 4 at 2:30 p.m. · easy to do solo

Saturday

🥜 Suffolk Peanut Fest Parade

Suffolk's parade stages in Lakeside and comes down West Washington onto North Main. This is the piece of Peanut Fest that lands this weekend, and there is no ticket for a parade. The festival itself is a separate thing on separate days: Suffolk Executive Airport, next Thursday to Sunday, October 8 to 11, $10 a head with kids 12 and under free and free parking.

  • Details: West Washington Street to North Main Street, downtown Suffolk · Saturday, October 3 · 10:00 a.m.

  • Cost: No ticket and no gate. It is a parade on a public street

👨‍👩‍👧 36th Annual Virginia Children's Festival

  • Details: Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street, Virginia Beach · Saturday, October 3 · 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

  • Cost: Free, and free parking

🍺 The Bier Garden's Oktoberfest

They close High Street in front of the restaurant and put a festhaus tent in the road. Nine straight hours of it in Olde Towne, and the First Weekends art market is a block away on High and Court the same morning, so you can make a day of two blocks.

  • Cost: Tickets $7.50 to $13.50

  • Source: Eventbrite

In 1949 France sent America forty-nine boxcars of gifts to say thank you for post-war aid. Newport News is dedicating a permanent gallery to Virginia's one, and Saturday is the ribbon cutting: historical remarks, live music, a French-themed reception and giveaways. The same building holds Harry Truman's World War I helmet, a section of the Berlin Wall, and a piece of the outer wall at Dachau.

  • Details: Virginia War Museum, 9285 Warwick Boulevard, Huntington Park, Newport News · Saturday, October 3 · 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Cost: The event page says it is open to the public but does not say whether the dedication itself is free. Standard museum admission is $8 adults, $7 for 62 and over, $6 for ages 7 to 18, $20 for a household. Call (757) 247-8523 if that matters to your plan

  • One note on the link, because we would want to know: the tourism board's URL for this has 2019 in the path, which looks like a recycled old listing. We do not think it is one. The page itself describes this Saturday, and that trailing number reads like their site's internal event ID rather than a year. We cannot prove that from the outside, though, so if you are putting this in front of a group, the museum's line is (757) 247-8523

🏁 YESCO Championship Night at Langley Speedway

Points night on Hampton's own 0.395-mile oval, and the thing the championship name is pointing at is the YESCO Limited Late Models 50-lapper, the longest race on a six-feature card. Six divisions run: Super Trucks, UCARs, Super Streets, the Limited Late Models, Enduros and Pro Six. The Enduro title is the close one. Tillman Heuer leads on 293 points with three wins, Zac Herdlein is fourteen back, and Alex Floroff sits third on 259 with the most wins in the class at seven.

Do not just turn up at six. Grandstand gates open at 2, qualifying is at 3:30, there is live music in the fan zone from 4, and the anthem is at 5:45. You can make a whole afternoon of this one.

  • Details: Larry King Law's Langley Speedway, 11 Dale Lemonds Drive, Hampton · Saturday, October 3 · gates 2:00 p.m., features from 6:00 p.m. · no closing time published, but 195 green-flag laps is a long night

  • Cost: $15 adults, $13 military and 65-plus, $7 for ages 6 to 12, under 5 free, $35 for a family four-pack

🎼 "The President's Own" United States Marine Band

Free, but the ticket has to be in your hand, you can only get four, and the Sandler holds what it holds. To be precise about it, because around here the distinction matters: this is the Washington band, the one that plays for the president and has since John Adams, not a fleet band. It tours in the Sousa tradition and it does not come through often. Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin conducting.

  • Details: Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Virginia Beach · Saturday, October 3 · 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. · tickets are valid until 7:15 p.m., open seating after that · easy to do solo

  • Cost: Free, tickets required, limit four per request. Large bags are not permitted

  • Source: Free tickets

Sunday

🧚 Whimsy Realm Fest

A fae and fantasy market: costumed vendors, fantasy artisans, photo ops, costumes encouraged and not remotely required. Nine hours of it in the Pagoda garden, and free. One caution, because it caught us too: this moved here from New Realm in Virginia Beach and the old listing is still circulating.

  • Details: Pagoda & Oriental Garden, 265 West Tazewell Street, Norfolk · Sunday, October 4 · 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

  • Cost: Free

  • Source: Whimsy Realm

🎻 CommUNITY Play-In & Sing Along

The program runs from the Star Spangled Banner through Holst's Jupiter. Registering to play is available and is not required to come.

  • Details: Booker T. Washington High School, 1111 Park Avenue, Norfolk · Sunday, October 4 · 3:00 p.m. · easy to do solo

Every Week

New section, and small on purpose. Nothing here is a one-off. These are standing things you can join, keep doing, and already know the next date for. If you moved here a while ago and the festivals have started to feel like tourism in your own city, this part is for you.

🌱 TEAM FRED, the volunteer crew at the Fred Heutte garden in Norfolk, works every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, year round, and the next one is Saturday, October 3. Their own page is the least intimidating invitation we read all week: "No gardening experience is needed. Bring your own gloves and tools or borrow ours. Come for the whole time or an hour or two." Nothing to register for, no fee posted, and if Saturday is bad they run a second crew Wednesdays from 9 to 11. It is Norfolk's public urban garden, which means the work is still there the next time you walk past it.

  • Details: 1000 Botetourt Gardens, Norfolk · Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon · drop in, no application needed

🦉 The Hampton Roads Bird Club walks Newport News Park on the first and third Sunday of the month at 7 a.m., which makes the next one Sunday, October 4. Read this one twice, because the meeting spot has moved. The club's own notice, in their capitals: "THE FIRST WALK IN OCTOBER WILL BE HELD ACROSS THE WATER AT THE CAMPGROUND. MEET IN THE CAMPGROUND OFFICE PARKING LOT AT THE USUAL TIME, 7 AM." The reason is Fall-O-Ween, which is also in this issue, taking the Ranger Station end of the park that weekend. No fee posted and no registration. Their September 20 writeup had 21 people out and a barred owl at eye level, so you will not be the only one standing there.

  • Details: Campground office parking lot, Newport News Park · Sunday, October 4 · 7 a.m. · not the usual Ranger lot this week

🪕 The Tidewater Bluegrass Society jams every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Roosevelt Area Civic League in Norfolk. This one sits outside the weekend on purpose: tonight works if this catches you early, and so does every Thursday after it. Bring an instrument and sit in, or bring nothing and listen. No fee is posted. The part worth knowing is that this is one of ten jams the same society runs around the region, eight of them inside our cities, in a body shop, a church, a village hall and a vintage shop, so if Thursday in Norfolk does not work there is very likely one closer to you on another night.

  • Details: Roosevelt Area Civic League, Norfolk · Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m. · bring an instrument or just listen

💃 Friday night social dancing at DanceSportVA in Virginia Beach, 6:30 to 10 p.m., and "No Partner Needed" is their line, not ours. They also staff dance hosts to keep people on the floor, which is the detail that matters if you are walking in by yourself. This Friday, October 2, is the first Friday of the month, so it is the Kizomba and Latin night: a beginner Hustle class at 6:30, a second one at 7:30, then kizomba, bachata, salsa and merengue in the club with a ballroom mix running in the main ballroom. $20 a person, 50 cents more if you buy online, and that covers both rooms and includes beer and wine. One thing to know before you build a habit on it: the format rotates, so first and third Fridays are Latin and second and fourth are country and West Coast swing.

  • Details: 5721 Arrowhead Drive, Virginia Beach · Friday, October 2 · 6:30 to 10 p.m. · no partner needed

  • Cost: $20 per person, plus a 50-cent fee online

  • Source: DanceSportVA

🏃 Fleet Feet's fun run goes out from their Virginia Beach store every Monday at 6:30 p.m., so the next one is Monday, October 5. Routes run 2 to 4 miles, and the store's own wording is the reason this is in here: "All ages, abilities, and paces are more than welcome." Nobody is going to drop you. No fee is posted, and people stay after with a snack to share.

  • Details: 4001 Virginia Beach Boulevard #139, Virginia Beach · Mondays, 6:30 p.m. · 2 to 4 mile routes, all paces

Two notes, and the first one will save somebody a drive. Williamsburg's farmers market is closed this Saturday. The city's own page says "NO MARKET OCTOBER 3." If that is your Saturday morning, this is the week it is not there.

And the honest accounting, since this section is new. All five items above were pulled up from the organiser's own page this morning rather than from an events listing, because recurring things die quietly and leave their websites up for years afterward. One candidate did not survive that check: we had a community concert band lined up, and its website has lapsed to a parked advertising page, so we cannot tell you whether the band still rehearses. It is not in here. Now the gap, stated properly. Four of these five are Norfolk or Virginia Beach. One is Newport News. None is Portsmouth, and we are not going to file Portsmouth under "Southside" and call it covered when there is a tolled tunnel between it and Norfolk. The Peninsula is thin here too. If you run or turn up to a standing weekly thing in Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton or Newport News, a walking group, a maker night, a jam, a church league, a beach cleanup, reply to this email. We will check it and print it.

🌊 City Cruises Norfolk has added sunset and sightseeing tours that leave from Hampton aboard the Manhattan Elite, filling the gap left when the Hampton Queen stopped sailing.

🏈 Norfolk State put together its first back-to-back wins since 2021 with a 43-20 result over Chicago State, moving to 3-2 and handing Michael Vick his first road win as head coach.

🎃 Great Bridge Pumpkin Patch on South Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake is absorbing about $600 more per semi load in delivery costs this season, owner John Biddle told 13News Now.

👶 The Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency received a $100,000 grant from the TowneBank Foundation to help local families cover the cost of diapers.

One ask, and it is specific. Forwarding the whole thing is fine, but the higher-percentage move is to pick the single listing that is obviously for one person you know and send them just that. The Peninsula parent gets Fall-O-Ween and the Southside parent gets India Fest, both free and free to park. The friend who swears there is nothing to do here gets the ViBe Friday. Whoever works Saturdays gets the Sunday sing-along if they are on the Southside and the dollar carousel if they are not. Whoever grew up here gets the Merci Train. And the one who moved here last year and still does not know anybody gets Every Week, not an event. That is how people find us, one listing at a time.
